In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 15, verses 21-28. It involves a Canaanite woman who approached Jesus seeking help for her demon-possessed daughter.
When the woman asked Jesus for assistance, he initially responded by saying, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24). The woman persisted in her request, and Jesus replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs” (Matthew 15:26). However, the woman cleverly responded, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table” (Matthew 15:27).
By calling the woman a “dog” in this context, Jesus was not expressing actual disdain or disrespect for her. Instead, he was using a cultural metaphor that was commonly employed during that time. The term “dogs” was often used by Jewish people to refer to Gentiles, considering them as outside the covenant community of Israel.
The primary lesson Jesus was teaching his disciples through this encounter was about the inclusive nature of God’s kingdom and the importance of faith. Initially, Jesus’ statement seemed to indicate that he had come primarily for the Jews, but the woman’s response demonstrated her great faith and humility. Jesus commended her, saying, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish” (Matthew 15:28).
In this interaction, Jesus emphasized the importance of reaching out to all people, regardless of their ethnicity or cultural background, and recognizing that faith can be found in unexpected places. It teaches his disciples, and us today, to embrace and accept all people with love and compassion, regardless of their differences.

The encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, as described in the Gospel of John, holds profound lessons and conveys a central message that Jesus sought to impart to humanity. This encounter not only reveals Jesus’ compassion and inclusivity but also emphasizes the transformative power of encountering Christ and the offer of eternal life.
The story begins with Jesus traveling through Samaria, a region where Jews typically avoided contact with Samaritans due to historical and religious tensions. Despite this cultural barrier, Jesus intentionally stops at a well and asks the Samaritan woman for a drink of water. In doing so, he breaks societal norms, engaging in a conversation with a woman and crossing the boundaries of ethnicity and religious tradition.
Throughout their dialogue, Jesus gradually reveals his divine knowledge, indicating that he is the Messiah. He speaks of “living water,” a metaphorical representation of the eternal life he offers. The woman, initially perplexed by Jesus’ words, gradually begins to grasp their significance. Jesus explains that the water he provides is a source of spiritual nourishment, capable of quenching the deepest thirst of the soul.

One crucial aspect of this encounter is the woman’s past. Jesus reveals her history of multiple marriages and her current relationship, which the woman perceives as a sign of Jesus’ prophetic insight. Rather than condemning or judging her, Jesus extends his mercy and forgiveness. He acknowledges her past, yet highlights the opportunity for transformation and redemption through a relationship with him.
The central message that Jesus conveys through this encounter is twofold. First, he emphasizes the universality of his message and the inclusivity of his grace. Jesus intentionally breaks societal norms and reaches out to those who are considered outcasts or marginalized, demonstrating that his salvation is available to all, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or personal history.
Secondly, Jesus underscores the transformative power of encountering him. The Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus at the well leads to a transformative experience. She recognizes Jesus as the Messiah and becomes an instrument for spreading his message to her community. Her encounter with Christ not only changes her perception of herself but also compels her to share her newfound faith with others. In this way, Jesus teaches that encountering him brings about a radical shift in one’s life, leading to a desire for repentance, renewal, and the proclamation of his truth.
Ultimately, the main message that Jesus intended to teach through the encounter with the woman at the well is that he is the source of living water, offering eternal life and forgiveness to all who believe in him. He seeks to break down barriers, embrace all people, and invite them into a transformative relationship that brings spiritual nourishment, forgiveness, and the hope of everlasting life.
